The first of the seven nights
Gift in green
The night was deep and silent, except for the whispers of the river that curled around the sleeping village of Aathi. The moon, half-hidden behind clouds, cast a soft silver light over the endless stretch of green — the paddy fields, the coconut palms, and the mangroves that guarded the land like kind sentinels.
That night, a strange unease hung in the air. It was the first of seven nights that would change Aathi forever.
Among the quiet homes, Kunjimathu sat by her oil lamp, her wrinkled hands busy weaving coconut leaves into small mats. She had lived all her life in this green paradise, where every drop of rain was a blessing and every leaf whispered a story. But tonight, her heart was heavy — the land she loved was under threat. Outsiders had come, talking about progress, roads, and buildings. To them, Aathi was just land. To her, it was life itself.
As she worked, she remembered the old days — when children played in the rain, when the river sang at dawn, and when no one could imagine life without the soft touch of green around them. Her memories felt like a prayer, whispered to the earth.
Outside, the rain began to fall — gently at first, then harder, as if the sky itself was weeping for Aathi. The river rose, glowing faintly in the moonlight, as though listening to the heartbeat of the land.
And in that moment, nature itself seemed alive, awake, and watching.
That night, the first of seven, was not just a passing storm. It was the beginning of a great awakening — of people realizing that land is not something to own or sell, but something to love, protect, and pass on like a sacred gift.
When morning came, Kunjimathu stepped outside. The air smelled of wet earth, fresh and pure. The fields shimmered in sunlight, and a sense of quiet strength filled her heart.
The land had given her everything — food, water, peace, and stories. And now, it was her turn to give something back.
The green was not just color. It was life.
It was love.
It was the greatest gift of all. 🌱
